Since each year brings a new group of motorcycle riders, both young and old, to the highways; motorcycle safety and awareness is and will always be an uphill battle. There will never be a single product, organization, or program that solves every aspect of keeping riders safe.

Ensuring the safety of motorcyclists must be a vigilant joint effort among all interested parties - motorcycle manufacturers, vehicle insurance companies, safety equipment manufacturers, parts and accessory manufacturers, government agencies (law enforcement and rescue agencies), healthcare providers (pre-hospital and hospital level), the riders of said motorcycles as well as their friends and family members.

The only way to ensure the greatest level of safety is for everyone to tirelessly do their part in creating the safest environment possible. As a motorcycle rider myself I had the great pleasure to interview a true motorcycle safety advocate, Mr. Erick Canela

Erick Canela wasted no time buying his first motorcycle. Two months after his 16th birthday, he was the proud owner of a used 1976 Honda CB750.

"Motorcycles have always been an integral part of my life," says Canela. "Teaching Motorcycle Safety allows me to share that passion with others.

Erick Canela is certified as a rider coach by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF). As a rider coach he facilitates courses designed to teach riders effective motorcycle operational skills and risk management strategies. Besides his duties as a trainer he has created and implemented motorcycle safety initiatives to involve motorcycle clubs, motorcycle dealers, and motorists in promoting safer riding.

Erick Canela has been blogging about Motorcycle Safety for the past 7 years and has used that platform as a way to connect with motorcycle enthusiast all around the world. "I have been a strong advocate of motorcycle safety for many years now," said Canela. "It is important that riders and motorists alike are reminded to take every precaution to keep our riders safe and this caucus serves as a great platform" Says Canela.

"Motorcycles make up two percent of all registered vehicles in the state of Florida, yet in 2010, they accounted for nine percent of total traffic fatalities, ten percent of all occupant fatalities, and three percent of all occupants injured," says Canela. "Per mile traveled, motorcyclists are about 37 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a traffic crash. Unlike passenger cars, there's no protection on a motorcycle, which greatly increases the likelihood of being seriously injured or killed in a crash.

"In an environment of increasing new riders, increasing returning riders and more importantly, increasing injuries and fatalities; there's has never been a greater need for an increase in efforts to promote safety" says Canela.
